[Apiaceae] (Lewis & Short); the old Arabic name of a plant native from Greece to Egypt; “the old name as well as the specific epithet for anise (Pimpinella anisum), much used for flavoring in various condiments, sweets, medicines, and liqueurs” (Stearn 1996); a flavor and fragrance associated also with Illicum verum (star anise), Illicum anisatum (Japanese star anise), fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) and licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra);
