A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
aphyllus,-a,-um (adj.A): without leaves, leafless; “without leaves or apparently so” (Stearn 1996); cf. nudus; cf. exfoliatus,-a,-um (part.A), with the leaves removed;’ see leafless;

- ramis gracillimis, in vetustioribus aphyllis, with branches very slender, the older ones leafless.

- scapi aphylli, 1-3-flori (B&H), scapes leafless, 1-3-flowered; rami aphylli, branches leafless.

- scapi subdichotomi, paniculati, aphylli (B&H), scapes somewhat dichotomous, paniculate, leafless

- racemi elongati, aphylli, racemes elongate, without leaves.

- herbae basi lignosae v. suffrutices ramosissimi, interdum aphylli, herbs woody at the base or a subshrub very much branched, sometimes leafless.

- frútices inermes v. ramis apice spinescentibus, interdum aphylli (B&H), unarmed shrubs or with branches spinescent at the apex, sometimes leafless.

- flores quam in Coelogyne minores, racemosi, pedúnculo sub anthesi terminali plurivaginato aphyllo, foliis tardius evolutis (B&H), the flowers smaller than in Coelogyne [abl.sg.], racemose, with the peduncle at flowering terminal, with several [many] sheathes, leafless [i.e. at flowering time], with the leaves more tardily developed.

Aphyllae [sc. Plantae], ‘lacking leaves:’ “Lindley’s term for Thallophytes” (Jackson); see thallophyte.
