A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Astacus,-i (s.m.II), abl.sg. astaco = Gk. Astakos: “a kind of crab” (Lewis & Short); “the lobster or crayfish” (Glare); see crab;

- Corallina Astaci corniculorum aemula (Tourn.), Corallina resembling [+ gen.] the little horns of a crab.

- Corallina Astaci corniculorum aemula. Corallinae affinis non ramosae, avenacei coloris, Astacorum corniculi instar geniculata. Muscus marinus seu Coralloides non ramosus (Tourn.), a Corallina resembling the little horns of a crab. [related to an unbranched coralline, of the color of oats, geniculate like the little horsn of crabs. A marine [moss, i.e. cryptogam] or unbranched Coralloides.

- Posterior Astacus supina parte nigricat, prona lutescit, lateribus nigris maculis variegatis, cornua, & appendices, quae ori prostant, mineaceo colore splendens, chelae maiores in hoc, longioresque, quam in priore, & paucioribus tuberculis, denticulatae intus exiguis tuberculis (Ulysse Aldrovandi), the Astacus, behind, with the part bent back, is black, with the forward-leaning part yellowish, with the sides variegated with black marks, the horns and appendages, which project from the head [or mouth], glittering with a mineaceous [i.e. vermillion, fiery red] color, in this [sc. creature] the chelae are larger, and longer, than in the earlier one, and with fewer tubercles, denticulate on the inside with a few tubercles.

Astacus, Fabricius, 1775: a genus of crayfish with three extant and four extinct (fossil) species. Species Astacus astacus L. 1758.
