A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Burl, shaggy cloth, a knot or lump in thread or cloth; a hard woody growth occurring on the trunks or branches of trees: lignotuber,-eris (s.n.III): abl. sing. lignotubere, nom. & acc. pl. lignotubera, dat. & abl. pl. lignotuberibus: a burl of wood.

NOTE: (spelled ‘burr’), “a woody outgrowth from the bark of certain trees” (Jackson).

NOTE: gnaurs, “burrs or knotty excrescences on tree-trunks or roots, probably from clusters of adventitious buds” (Jackson).
