A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
campo-, campso-, campto-, campylo-: in Gk. comp., bent, curved; campto-, > Gk. kamptos flexible akin to Gk kampE bend bent, curved (WIII);

- campylocalyx,-icis, with a bent calyx; campylodromus, with bent secondary veins; camptopetalus, with bent or curved petals; campylopodus, with a curved or bent foot, stipe or stalk.

- campylotropous, campylotropicous: (of ovules) ‘having the ovule curved so that the micropyle is located near the base” (WIII); (fungi) “curved” (S&D): campylotropus,-a,-um (adj.A), campylotropicus,-a,-um (adj.A).

- Polytrichum campylocarpum, a moss with a theca “cylindrica valde curvata,” cylindric, strongly curved.

Campylopus Brid., from Gk. campylo-, bent, and pous, a foot, in reference to the curved or cygneous "foot," or seta in this genus of mosses. Campylium (Sull.) Mitt. "The name refers to a curvature and may refer to leaves which are generally curved and spreading, or perhaps to arcuate capsules."

Campylophyllum p. 945, Campylostelium BSG, "The name, meaning a curved pillar, refers to a cygneous seta (curved like the neck of a swan)."

CAMPYLOPHYTUM, a vocibus KampylotEs, obliquitas, flexus & phytov planta derivatur (Necker), Campylophytum, derived from the words KampyloEs, obliquity, a bending, and phyton, plant.

Campylostelium: pedicellus e vaginula cylindrica capillaris, laevis. magis minusve arcuato-flexuosus (DozyMoeken), the pedicell hair-like from a cylindric vaginula, smooth, more or less arcuate-flexuose. Also:

- Campylostelium: nomen e vocibus kampulos curvus et steleon securis manubrium q. e. pedunculis, ob pedunculum curvum Campylopodi affinem ductum (mosses; Mueller),the name derived from the words kampylos, curved and steleon, the haft of an axe, that is, to the peduncles, related to Campylopodus due to the curved peduncle.

Eucamptodon, Ab ‘eu’ perfecte, kamptos, incurvus et odous, dens, ob dentes peristomii madefactos perfecte incurvos nomen ductum (mosses; Mueller), the name derived from ‘eu’ completely, kamptos, incurved and odous, tooth, because the teeth of the peristome, when wetted, are completely incurved.

Seligeria campylopoda Kindb. ex Macoun & Kindb. The name refers to the curved seta.

Campylanthera, with curved anthers: “antherae oblongae, primum erectae, mox superne revolutae, 2-rimosae” (B&H), anthers oblong, at first erect, soon revolute above, two-fissured.

Camptosorus Link. Walking fern, Gk. camptos, flexible, and soros, fruit-dot, from the sori becoming confluent at the ends and forming crooked lines; Campylium, a genus of pleurocarpous mosses "The name refers to a curvature and may refer to leaves which are generally curved and spreading, or perhaps to arcuate capsules" (C&A); Campylophyllum, with curving leaves.

Campyloptera, ‘curved wing’ from the broadly winged incurved margins of the siliquae: siliquae biformes, cymbaeformes, marginibus incurvis late alatis (B&H), the silique of two shapes, with the incurved margins broadly winged.

The fungus genera Campo-sporium; Campso-trichum; Campto-meris, Camptomyces, Camptosphaeria, Camptosporium; Campylo-basidium, Campylospora, Campylostylus, Campylothecium.
