A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
canus,-a,-um (adj.A): “Grey-white. A term applied to hairy surfaces” (Lindley); “hoary; gray” (Jackson); grayish white, usu. applied to hair-covering, i.e. pubescence; “white, hoary; applied to water (aqua), foamy, frothy; (of snow (nix)) white; (of pruina) hoary-frost; especially of the gray hair of the aged, i.e. cani,-orum [sc. capilli), gray hairs,” the gray-haired ones (Lewis & Short); usually or often associated with indument terms, such as hirsut-, tomentoso-, piloso-canus; syn. incanus,-a,-um (adj.A), a more intense grayish white; see hoary, canescens,-entis (part.B);

“Of things having, or considered as having a white covering; also the things giving such a covering: (of the sea, waves, etc.) whitened, foam-capped; whitened with dust or ashes; white with snow, frost, etc. (of trees, [plants) covered with light or silvery foliage, etc; white- or gray-haired (implying old age (after Glare).

NOTE: not to be confused with canis,-is (s.c.III), a dog.

- folia ramulorum juniorum parva, linearía, cano-tomentosa (B&H), leaves of the younger branchlets small, linear, grayed-white-tomentose.

- herbae saepe elatae, strictae, glabrae v. saepius pilis bipartitis appressis canae (B&H), herbs often tall, upright, glabrous or more often grayish-white with appressed 2-parted hairs.

- siliculis ovalibns hirsuto-canis (DeCandolle), with the silicles oval, hirsute-grayish-white.

- foliis oblongo-linearibus tomentoso-canis (DeCandolle), with the leaves oblong-linear, tomentose-grayish-white.

- siliculis orbiculato-ellipticis piloso-canis (DeCandolle), with the silicles orbiculate-elliptic, pilose-grayish-white.

- pube brevi tomentosa stellata canis (DeCandolle), with the pubescence short, tomentose, stellate, grayish-white.

- foliis lyrato-pinnatifidis dentatis canis (DeCandolle), with the leaves lyrate-pinnatifid, dentate, hoary-white.

- foliis ovatis, plus minusve canis. (DeCandolle), with the leaves ovate, more or less hoary-white.

- herbae pleraeque annuae, nunquam setulis bipartitis appressis canae (B&H), herbs, very many of them annual, never gray with appressed, bipartite little bristles.

cinereus,-a,-um (adj.A): ash-colored, ash gray, “ash-gray; a mixture of white and black” (Lindley).

griseus,-a,-um (adj.A): gray, pearl-gray, pure gray a little verging to blue.
