A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Copia,-ae (s.f.I): abundant power; abundance; (of material objects) possession: riches, wealth, supplies; fullness, copiousness, abundance, number, multitude;

- Cornucopia,-ae (s.f.I), q.v., and cornu copiae: horn of plenty; “the horn of the goat Amalthea placed in heaven, = Gk. keras amaltheias,” “the emblem of fruitfulness and abundance.”

- nomina generica magna copia a Rafinesquio temere proposita, et genera Maderensia Bowdichii certe falsa et nequáquam recognoscenda (B&H), a large multitude of generic names proposed at random [i.e. casually] by Rafinesque, and the Maderensian genera of Bowdich, are certainly false and not at all to be recognized.

- mericarpiis undique copia setularum ciliatarum dense tomentoso-hispidis. (F. Mueller), with the mericarps all over densely tomentose-hispidous with an abundance of ciliate small bristles.

- tertio quovis anno copia prodire videtur abundantissima (S&A), in any third year it seems to spring forth in the greatest number.

- [fungus] provenit ad ramos caesos antiquos putrescentes Carpini Betulae, quos semel tantum (Anstaltshof), sed ingenti ejus copia totos paene obtectos vidimus exeunte Novembri (S&A), on the ancient, rotting fallen branches of Carpinus, Betula, which only once occurred (at Anstaltshof), but we saw almost the whole covered with a huge mass of it.

- [Lichen fontanus major “the great water liverwort” (Dill.)] sanat icteritiam, decocto ejus assumpto, aut aqua destillata: purgat leviter humores adustos & crassos, si in magna copia assumatur (Dill.), it cures jaundice, by a decoction [i.e. potion] of it taken, or distilled in water: it lightly cleanses the humores [i.e. body fluids] burned [i.e. from inflammation or fever] and thick, if it might be taken ‘in large amounts.’

- [Vitis indica] Caules 1. sarmenta inferiora hujus viminis copia aquae purissimae frigidaeque sunt repleti, detruncatione mox exstillantis. Hujus ope, íncolae, climatis torridi calori expositi, sitim non raro commodeque exstinguunt (Swartz), the stems or [l. = vel] lower sarmenta [of this flexible branch] are filled with an abundance of the purest and cold water, soon trickling out after detruncation [i.e. cutting or lopping off]. by this means, the inhabitants [i.e. natives] exposed to the heat of a torrid [i.e. parching] climate, not uncommonly completely extinguish [i.e. quench] their thirst.

- apparet muscos, praeter Oxygenem, Hydrogenem et Carbonem , qui omnium vegetabilium compaginem efficiunt eorumque principia constitutiva formant, continere terram calcaream magna copia (Bridel), it appears that mosses, beyond Oxygen, Hydrogen and Carbon, which make up the structure of all plants and form their constitutive elements, make up calcareous soil in great abundance.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
