A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Corn (Eng.noun), Zea Mays L., maize, corn; “cereals generally; in the United States it is confined to maize” (Jackson); “a tall annual cereal grass (Zea mays) originally domesticated in Mexico and widely grown for its large elongated ears of starchy seeds — called also Indian corn, maize” (Merriam-Webster); also “grain growing in ears, grain of which bread is made, grain standing in the field (unthreshed) [Zea Mays L., maize, corn, Indian corn. Linnaeus, Sp. Pl. 971, 1 Mai 1753; Zea (s.f.I); Stearn: -ys ending, usually rendered in gen. sg. -ydis]; see Zea; the epithet, mays, derives from an aboriginal name [‘corn’ = L. granum,-i (s.n.II) WIII]; ‘corn’ = British ‘wheat;’; Scot & Irish = oats; “the seeds of any of the cereal grasses used for food” (WIII).

- cornmeal agar, agar farinae Zeae maydis;

- coloniae in agaro farinae Zeae maydis crescentes, colonies growing in an agar of cornmeal.

Maize: genus: Mays Tourn. [gen.sg. maydis].

Puccinia Maydis, Patsch, living on leaves of Zea mays; Ustilago Maydis, Cd., living on flowers and fruit of Zea Mays; Bipolaris maydis, fungus causing Southern Leaf Blight.
