A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
costatus,-a,-um (adj.A): costate, ribbed, having a costa or midrib, having one or more primary veins or ridges; “having one or more longitudinal ribs or nerves” (Fernald 1950); “ribbed, having one or more primary veins or ridges” (Stearn); (fungi)’veined or ribbed’ (Ainsworth & Bisby);’ ridged; fluted’ (S&D); cf. nerved, veined; see ‘veining;’ cf. vittatus,-a,-um (adj.A); see ribbed; see ridged;

- sepalis longi-costatis, with long-ribbed sepals, sepals with long mid-ribs.

- semina 1- vel 2-costata, the seeds 1-2-ribbed.

- nux magna, indehiscens, demum cristulis angustis 2 - 5 ab apice stylifero ad medium decurrentibus costata, calyce accrescente stipata (B&H), nut large, indehiscent, finally ribbed with 2-5 narrow little crests running down from the style-bearing apex to the middle, stalked, fused with the calyx.

callicostatus,-a,-um (adj.A), q.v.: with a thick or strong midrib or costa [> L. calli-, thick, hardened + costatus, provided with a costa].

Hookeria callicostata, a moss with ‘nervis crassis,’ thick nerves.

costato-venosus,-a,-um (adj.A): “when the parallel side-veins of a feather-veined leaf are much stouter than those which intervene” (Lindley).

ecostatus,-a,-um (adj.A): without a costa or midrib; see enervis,-e (adj.B).

evanidinervius,-a,-um (adj.A), evanidinervis,-e (adj.B): with nerves (or in mosses, the costae) becoming faint and disappearing before reaching the margin or apex; cf. excurrentinervis, with the nerves extending beyond the margin or apex.

excurrentinervius,-a,-um (adj.A), excurrentinervis,-e (adj.B): with the nerves or, in mosses, the costae, extending beyond the margin or apex, with the nerve or costa excurrent.

multicostatus,-a,-um (adj.A): with many costae, ribs, nerves;

- [Leguminosae] siliqua elongata, valvis concavis multicostatis (B&H), the silique elongate, with the valves concave, with many nerves.

1-costatus, with one costa or nerve; 2-costatus, with two costae; 3-costatus, with three costae, etc.;

- achenia saepius compressa, faciebus 1-3-nerviis -costatisve (B&H), the achenes more often compressed, with the faces 1-3-nerved or -costate.
