A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

cyprius,-a,-um (adj.A):

1. cyprian, cypriot, of or relating to the Mediterranean island of Cyprus [Cyprus,-i (s.f.II), q.v.];

- tellus cypria, abl.sg. tellure cypria: the land of [the Mediterranean island of] Cyprus.

- Calamus Cyprius, abl.sg. Calamo Cyprio, the Calamus of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus.

2. of copper, copper- [> L. Cuprium,-ii (s.n.II), abl.sg. cuprio, = copper (Eng.noun) > aes Cyprium, gen.sg. aeris Cyprii, abl.sg. aeris Cyprio.

The following species’ epithets may refer to either of the above meanings, or possibly to a copper-color; however, most seem to refer to sense (1) ;

Astragalus cyprius, in which Cyprus is its native range; Crocus cyprius is native to Cyprus; Cyperus cyprius, native to Cyprus; Dianthus cyprius, endemic to Cyprus.

Fissidens cyprius [synonym of F. limbatus]; Juncus cyprius; Rumex cyprius.

Arabis cypria, endemic to Cyprus; Arenaria cypria, native to Cyprus; Asperula cypria; Bosea cypria; Campanula cypria; Cleome cypria.

Allium cyprium; Arum cyprium, native to Cyprus; Asplenium cyprium; Piper cyprium; Sedum cyprium; Taraxacum cyprium.

NOTE: a copper color may be expressed as cupreus,-a,-um (adj.A), cuprinus,-a,-um (adj.A), etc.; see coppery (Eng.adj.).

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
