A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Deer: cervus,-i (s.m.II), q.v., abl. sg. cervo, a stag, deer; see reindeer; see antler; see caprea,-ae (s.f.I), capreolus,-i (s.m.II);

Cerva,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. cerva: the hind, deer; deer, baby, a fawn: hinnuleus (hinnulus),-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. hinnuleo (hinnulo); see cervus,-i (s.m.II); see deer.

Cervula,-ae (s.f.I): a little hind (deer); cervulus,-i (s.m.): a small hart (deer)[> L. dim. cerva,-ae (s.f.I) hind or female deer].

Damma,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. damma; also dama,-ae (s.f.I): “a general name for the beasts of the deer kind: a fallow deer, buck, doe, antelope, chamois” (Lewis & Short).

- Agaricus foliatus, cornua Damae referens (Tourn.), the foliated [i.e. leafy] Agaric, resembling the horns of a deer [i.e.antlers].

Hinnuleus (hinnulus),-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. hinnuleo (hinnulo); a young stag (hart) or roebuck; hinnulea,-ae (s.f.I), a young hind; “fawn, a young deer still retaining a distinctive baby coat” (WIII).

hinnuleus,-a,-um (adj.A): fawn-colored, light brown tinged with yellow; “a tawny, cinnamon color” (Jackson) [> L. hinnuleus,-i (s.m.II), abl.sg. hinnuleo: a young stag or roebuck].

Rangifer,-feri (s.m.II), q.v., abl.sg. Rangifero, nom. pl. Rangiferi, acc. pl. Rangiferos: “”a genus consisting of the domestic and wild reindeer and caribous” (WIII).

Tarandrum,-i (s.m.II), abl.sg. tarandro: “an animal found in northern countries; according to Cuvier, the reindeer” (Lewis and Short); note their spelling differs from the Linnaean epithet, as does the Greek: tarandros (s.m.II), “a horned beast, native of Scythia, reindeer, or more probably elk” (Liddell & Scott).

elapho-: in Gk. comp. fawn-colored (light brown tinged with yellow) [> Gk. elaphos (s.(m.&f.) II), deer, Cervus elaphus, whether male, ‘hart’ or ‘stag’, or female, ‘hind’; also deerskin (Liddell & Scott)].

- cornua cervi ramosa, the branched horns of a stag.

- cornu caprae, horn of a she-goat.

- cornu cervi, horn of a deer.

- cornu damae, horn of a fallow deer (Stearn 1983).

Elaphoglossum,-i (s.n.II), Hart’s Tongue Fern, > Gk. elaphos, a stag + glossa, a tongue; “in allusion to the shape of the fronds in some species.... Aspleniaceae” (Stearn 1996).

Hart (Eng.noun): chiefly British: an adult male deer, especially a red deer (Cervus elaphus) over five years old = stag.

Hind (Eng.noun): chiefly British: the female of the red deer [Cervus elaphus] at least two years old.

Stag (Eng.noun): “the adult male of the red deer;, specifically one five years of age or older; cf. hind; the male of various other deer of the genus Cervus; the male of various other large deer (as the caribou)” (WIII).

deer, relating to: 1. of or pertaining to deer, “belonging to or resembling deer,” 2. (of color) dark-tawny (the color of a deer); “tawny, deer-colored” (Paxton), 3. with complex branching like a reindeer's horn: cervarius,-a,-um (adj.A), cervinus,-a,-um (adj.A), q.v.; elaphinus,-a,-um (adj.A), rangiferinus,-a,-um (adj.A), q.v., relating to reindeer, q.v. (mammals of the genus Rangifer); see antlered.

hinnuleus,-a,-um (adj.A): fawn-colored, light brown tinged with yellow; “a tawny, cinnamon color” (Jackson) [> L. hinnuleus,-i (s.m.II), abl.sg. hinnuleo: a young stag or roebuck].
deer-colored, dark-tawny: cervinus,-a,-um (adj.A), q.v.; elaphinus,-a,-um (adj.A): rangiferinus,-a,-um (adj.A), q.v.; hinnuleus,-a,-um (adj.A): fawn-colored, light brown tinged with yellow; “a tawny, cinnamon color” (Jackson) [> L. hinnuleus,-i (s.m.II), abl.sg. hinnuleo: a young stag or roebuck]; see words in ‘deer, relating to.’
