A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Epiphyte, a plant living on (the surface of) another plant; “plants which grow upon the surface of others, as many Mosses and Orchids” (Lindley): epiphyton,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. epiphyto, nom. & acc. pl. epiphyta, dat. & abl. pl. epiphytis; opp. endophyte, q.v.

Cf. Air-plant: aerophyton,-i (s.n.II): “Aerophytes, plants growing wholly in the air; such as epiphytal Orchids, many Lichens, Bromelworts, &c.” (Lindley); “air-plant, epiphyte” (Jackson).

NOTE, however, that an epiphyte, is considered to be a plant that grows upon another plant, but, of course, in the air.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
