A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Etaerio,-onis (s.f.III), abl. sg. etaerione; etairium,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. etairio: (adj. etairional) “such a kind of aggregate fruit as that of the Ranunculus or Strawberry” (Lindley); “etaerio, Etairium, an aggregate fruit composed of achenes, follicles or drupes, as in Ranunculus, the Strawberry [Fragaria], and Blackberry [Rubus]” (Jackson) [> Gk. (h)etaireia (s.f.I), association; a political club or union, a friendly connexion, friendship, comradship, companionship]; see drupe.

A number of drupes aggregated together on a common thalamus form collectively a kind of Etaerio (Bentley).

In the Raspberry and Bramble [Rubus spp.], we have a kind of etaerio formed of a number of little drupes, or drupels as these small drupes are sometimes termed, crowded together upon a dry thalamus. The etaerio and its modifications are placed by Lindley under a class of fruits called by him aggregate fruits, the characters of more than a single series which are 'Ovaria strictly simple, produced by each flower.' The term aggregate is also by some botanists applied to fruits which are the produce of several flowers” (Bentley).

Erythrostomum,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. erythrostomo: “(obsol.) “any aggregate fruit like that of a Strawberry or Ranunculus” (Lindley); “(obsol.) Desvaux’s word for etaerio” (Jackson).

Polychorion, polychorionides “(obsol.) a polycarpous fruit like that of Raunculus; also polychoris [> chorion, foetal membrane (Jackson)]: synonyms of etaerio.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
