A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
etiolated, blanched “grown in absence of sunlight; blanched, as of celery; lacking in vigor or natural exuberance; lacking in strength (WIII); etiolation: the “result of growing a plant in darkness; the yellowing or whitening of a green plant through loss of sunlight” (WIII), > French, etioler + Eng. -ate: see ‘stunted;’ see various words for pale and “white, whitish, becoming or growing white or pale,” e.g.: exalbatus,-a,-um (part.A): white, made white; exalbescens,-entis (part.B): becoming white, becoming pale;

Myriophyllum exalbescens, the stems are purple, but when dry become white.

dealbatus,-a,-um (part.A), whitened, covered with a white powder, as whitewash; exalbatus,-a,-um (part.A): white, made white; exalbidus,-a,-um (adj.A), whitish; expallescens,-entis (part.B), pallescens,-entis (part.B), pale, growing or turning very pale;

- plantae aetate expallescentes, plants with age growing very pale.

- foliis in locis umbrosis exalbescentibus, with the leaves in shaded places becoming pale.
