A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
extus (adv.): outside, on the outside, externally; (with verbs of motion) to the outside; opp. intus (adv.): 'on the inside, within;' cf. subtus (adv.) 'below, beneath, underneath, in a lower place;' cf. extimus,-a,-um (adj.A): outermost, farthest, most remote; see inside, outside;

- somata verrucis extus papillis intus ornata, bodies ornamented with warts on the outside, with papillae inside.

- volva arcte vaginata extus grisea, volva closely sheathed gray on the outside.

- calyx extus glandulosus, calyx on the outside glandular.

- pericarpium siccum vel extus succulentum, rarius totum carnosum, pericarpium dry or externally succulent, more rarely entirely fleshy.

- calyx extus pilis glandularibus minutis, calyx on the outside with minute, glandular hairs.

- sepalis interioribus extus haud papillatis, with the inner sepals on the outside papillate.

- labello obovato basi gibboso extus pubescente (DeCandolle), with the labellum obovate, gibbous at the base, externally pubescent.

- perigonii segmentis elliptico-linearibus extus vitta lata viridi notatis, tribus exterioribus apice subcarinatis (Boissier), with the segments of the perigonium elliptic-linear, outside with marked with a broad green stripe, with the three outer somewhat crested at the apex.

- petala 4-5 dentibus calycinis alterna, disco ovarium ambiente extus inserta et ideo inter hypogyna et perigyna ambigua (DeCandolle), the petals alternate with the 4-5 calyx-teeth, with the disc surrounding the ovary on the outside and consequently ambiguous between hypogynous and perigynous.

- valvae extus spadiceae, nitentes, reticulato-venosae, intus sordide fuscae (F. Mueller), the valves externally spadiceous [i.e.deep reddish-brown], shining, reticulate-veined, internally a dirty blackish-brown.

- [fungus; Peziza] cupulae 2 — 4 lin. latae, patulae, admodmn irregulares, intus valde plicatae vel rugosae sordide olivaceae, extus nigrae (S&A), the cuples 2-4 lines wide, spreading, very irregular, inside strongly plicate or rugose, dirtily olive-colored, outside a glossy black.

NOTE: cf. extra (adv.): on the outside, externally; opp. of intra (adv.): 'on the inside, inwardly;' cf. supra (adv. and prep. with acc.): on the upper side, above, beyond, over.'
