A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Flavedo,-inis (s.f.III), abl. sg. flavedine: yellowness, NL. > L. flavus, ‘yellow,’ “yellowness; a disease in which the green parts assume that color” (Lindley); the outer colored layer of the epicarp (= exocarp) of a citrus fruit (hesperidium, q.v.) wherein reside the essential oils, paraffin waxes, etc. Commonly called the ‘zest.’ This exposed waxy epidermal layer contains the chromoplasts; “the outer colored layer of the mesocarp of a citrus fruit” (WIII); see -edo,-inis (s.f.III).
