NOTE: cf. footnote (Eng. noun): “1. a note of reference, explanation, or comment placed below the text on a printed page or underneath a table or chart. 2. an utterance or action that is subordinated or added to a larger statement or event: commentary, afterthought” (WIII).

NOTE: cf. endnote (Eng. noun) “a note placed at the end of the text (as of an article or chapter)” (WIII).

Addendum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. addendo, nom. & acc. pl. addenda: “a thing that is added or is to be added, an addition, supplement; an explanation, comment, or additional item appended to a book; a list or section consisting of added material, esp. a supplement to a book sometimes issued separately” (WIII).

Animadversio,-onis (s.f.III), abl. sg. animadversione: perception, observation, consideration; the perception or observation of an object; consideration, attention.

Annotation, q.v., remark, comment, note; commentary (collection of comments); “a note added by way of comment or explanation” (WIII), observation, notice; see commentary; cf. nota,-ae (s.f.I):

Annotamentum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. annotamento: an annotation, remark.

Annotatio,-onis (s.f.III), abl. sg. annotatione, also adnotatio,-onis (s.f.III), abl. sg. adnotatione: a noting down in writing, a (written) remark, comment, mention, a notice; annotation.

Annotatiuncula,-ae (s.f.I), also adnotatiuncula,-ae (s.f.I): a brief annotation, a brief note or remark.

Appendix,-icis (s.f.III), acc. sg. appendicem, abl. sing. appendice, nom. & acc. pl. appendices, dat.& abl. pl. appendicibus; “that which hangs to anything, an appendage; an addition, supplement, or accession to anything;” (Lewis & Short); “matter added to a book but not essential to its completeness (as a bibliography or a series of tables usu. following the text); Eng. verb. to appendix: “to add as an appendix, append (“appendixed, indexed, and footnoted the book in bang-up scholarly fashion - New Yorker)” (WIII);

Calx, gen. sg. calcis (s.f. or m.III), the end, conclusion of a page, book, or writing (Lewis & Short); the end of a passage of literature, such as the ‘bottom’ of a paragraph; the conclusion, concluding part; often notes, an observation or annotation at the end of, e.g. an Order, Family, or species description in a manuscript.

Commentary: commentarium,-ii (s.n.II), abl. sg. commentario; commentarius,-ii (s.m.II), abl. sg. commentario; commentary, exposition, annotation; a notebook; an exposition; a collection of examples or citations; in book titles, an attempt to indicate the work is only a sketch.

Commentariolus,-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. commentariolo: “a short treatise, brief commentary” (Lewis & Short).

Emendatio,-onis (s.f.III), abl. sg. emendatione: correction, amendment.

- Observatio,-onis (s.f.III), abl. sg. observatione; Obs.

Explicatio,-onis (s.f.III), abl. sg. explicatione: explanation, exposition, analysis.

Nota,-ae (s.f.I), remark, comment, observation, annotation.

Notula,-ae (s.f.I), abl.sg. notula: a little mark, a small written note or article [> L. nota, ‘note’ + (dim.) -ulus,-a,-um (adj.A)].

Observatio,-onis (s.f.III), abl.sg. observatione, nom. & acc. pl. observationes, information; consideration, note, remark.

Observatiuncula,-ae (s.f.I), a small observation; [note, remark]: a minor or small observation.
