A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

forsitan (adv.): perhaps, perchance, possibly, it may be;

- [Phascum subexsertum; moss] forsitan Ph. cuspidati (proximae speciei) varietas memorabilis? (C. Muell.), perhaps deserving to be considered a variety of Phascum cuspidatum (the closest species).

- [Gossypium hirsutum] OBS. Varietas hujus est Xylon americanum praestantissimum, sem. virescenti. Tournef. ínst. 101. Gallis Cotonier de Soie nuncupatum, caeteris ob lanam praestantius, idque forsitan ope culturae (Swartz), [observationes] a variety of this is the most remarkable Xylon americanum, with a greenish seed. Tournef. ínst. 101. Gallis called Cotonier de Soie, the rest more remarkably due to the wool, and this, perhaps, with the help of husbandry.

- certissime Triandrum eft, filamentis juxta basin germinis insidentibus; sed ille forsitan vidit stamina pistillo adglutinata, ut in spiculis quibusdam interdum contingit (Swartz), it is most certainly a Triandr[i]um, with the filaments situated next to the base of the ovary; but he perhaps saw the stamens adhered to the pistil, as sometimes happens in certain spikelets.

- [fungi] hinc et ob crustam nonnumquam cinerascentem nostra forsitan intermedia inter S. byssisedam et cineream existimanda (S&A), for this reason, and due to the crust sometimes whitish-gray perhaps our [sc. species] ought to be considered intermediate between S. byssiseda and S. cinerea.

- [fungi] Var. a, statura varians in lignis praecipue salignis (Salicis albae et Capreae) aliquoties inventa: quacum convenit. [var.BB] colore aterrimo, at distat pulveris copia, minutie, loco — specie forsitan sejungenda (S&A), var. a, varying in stature, several times encountered on wood, especially willow (Salix alba and Caprea): with which it corresponds. [var. BB] distant by the color completely black, and also by the abundance of its powder [i.e. spores], its minuteness [i.e. tiny size], by its locality = perhaps should be separated as a species.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
