A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
h.e. (abbrev.): hoc est = that is, in other words, namely, that is to say; = i.e. (id est); see i.e.;

- [Dumortiera irrigua; hepatic] Spori ejus ut in D. hirsuta, h. e. ferruginei, tetrahedri, minute denseque papillosi, elateres quoque simillimi (Lindb.), its spores are as in D. hirsuta, that is ferrugineous [i.e. rust-red] , tetrahedral, minutely and densely papillose, the elaters, too, are completely similar.

-[Radula xalapensis; Hepatic] antheridia bina vel singulum in gremio suo fovent, h.e. ramus masculus apice ab inflorescentia feminea terminatur(Lindb.) the antheridia a set of two or one folded into its bosom, that is to say, the male branch is marked off from the feminine [one] at the apex.

- [hepatic] antheridia ejus quoque in axillis infracolescularibus posita, h.e. paroica planta est (Lindb.), its antheridia also situated in the infracolescular axils its antheridia situated in the infracolesular axils [i.e. axils below the colesule], that is, the plant is paroicous.

-[Martinellia: hepatic] Scapaniae? chloroleuca, densifolia et affines, quae e ceteris Scapaniis(h.e. Martinelliis) colesula bilabiata, labiis incisis et ciliatis etc: bene distinguuntur (Lindb.), [query] Scapania [i.e. species of] S. chloroleuca, S. densifolia and [their taxonomic] relatives, which from the [other] Scapania [sc. species] (that is Martinellia species) well distinguished by its bilabiate colesule, with the lips incised and ciliate etc.
