hal-, hali-, halo-: in Gk. comp., salt, associated with salty soil, also with the assimilation of salt in the branches; = L. sal, gen. sg. salis (s.m.III)) [> Gk. (h)als (s.m.III) a lump of salt; salt; (h)als, gen.sg. (h)alos (s.f.III): salt; (h)als, (h)alos (s.f.III), the sea, “generally of water near shore” (Liddell & Scott); (h)alinos,E,on (adj.), of salt); cf. Gk. (h)alim-, halimo: of salt; halist-, halisto-, salted, pickled; see halimus,-a,-um (adj.A): maritime, of the sea; cf. maritimus,-a,-um (adj.A): marine, maritime, growing on land near or in the sea;

- halobioticus,-a,-um (adj.A), halozoicus,-a,-um (adj.A), living in salty water.

- halobios,-a,-um (adj.A), halobius,-a,-um (adj.A): living or dwelling in salty water.

- halolimneticus,-a,-um (adj.A): halolimnetic, of or relating to to salt lakes; “belonging to the sea or salt lakes (Forel)” (Jackson); [see limn-, limno-: in Gk. comp., pertaining to standing or stagnant water, pools, lakes, marshes.

- halolimnicus,-a,-um (adj.A): halolimnic, referring to marine organisms so modified that they can live in fresh water.

- halophilus, salt-loving.

- halophobicus,-a,-um (adj.A), halophobus,-a,-um (adj.A), avoiding salt.

- halophyticus,-a,-um (adj.A): halophytic, growing in saline soil.

- halophyton,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. halophyton: halophyte, a plant of saline soil (Fernald 1950), salt plants.

- halimifolius,-a,-um (adj.A): “with leaves like Atriplex halimus (Gk. halimon), the tree purslane with silvery ovate and obovate leaves used in seaside planting in Britain” (Stearn 1996).

Halanthium,-ii (s.n.II); Halarchon [Chenopodiaceae], “ species 1, in salsuginosis Afghanistaniae obvia” (B&H), species 1, encountered in salty [sc. places, i.e. salt marshes] of Afghanistan; Halimium,-i (s.n.II), “from Gr. halimion, a maritime plant. Cistaceae” (Stearn 1996); Halocnemium cinereum “In locis salinis terrae Arnhem's Land et Australiae centralis” (F. Mueller), in saline places of the region Arnhem’s Land and of central Australia. Halimodendron halodendron, the Siberian salt-tree; Halogeton sativus, a saltwort; Haloxylon [= Salsola]; Halopeplis; Halostachus; Halothamnus,-i (s.m.II), Saltbush, > Gk. (h)als, ‘salt’ + thamnos, ‘bush.’

Halosaurus oweni, a fossil fish.

Haloplancton,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. haloplancto: haloplankton “the floating vegetation of salt-water” (Jackson); see plankton.

NOTE: halospore = “an error for Haplospore” (Jackson).
