A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Hasta,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. hasta: spear, pike, q.v., javelin, q.v. The nature of the spear must be the basis for the adjective ‘hastate,’ hence “shaped like an arrow with flaring barbs; (of a leaf), triangular with sharp basal lobes spreading away from the petiole” (WIII); the head of the arrow (sagitta,-ae (s.f.I), q.v. has basal barbs directed downward; the head of a spear (hasta,-ae (s.f.I), apparently has basal barbs that spread away from the central shaft; see hastatus,-a,-um (adj.A);

- hastae cuspìdi aut sagittae similibus, floribus in caule pluribus; SAGITTARIA (Ray), similar to the cusp of a spear or arrow, with the flowers many on the stem.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
