A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
hepaticus,-a,-um (adj.A): 1. pertaining to the liver. 2. liver-colored, dark reddish-brown; “dull brown with a little yellow” (Lindley); );(fungi) “1. Liver-Brown (R XIV; MP 7 H9); 2. also, a bluish purple between Petunia Violet R XXV and Phlox Purple R XI (S&D); see liver-colored [> Gk. hEpatikos, pertaining to the liver (S&D);

- pilei enim colorem variabilem, in aliis rubescentem, in aliis livescentem, fuligineum, subhepaticum — offendimus (S&A), for we come upon a variable color of the pileus, in some rubescent, in others livescent [i.e. a blue-gray], sooty-brown, nearly liver-colored [i.e. dull brown with a little yellow].
