A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Hyacinthus, or os,-i (s.m.II), abl.sg. hyacintho: “the hyacinth, not, however, our hyacinth, but either the blue iris or fleur-de-lis, Iris Germanica L.; the corn-flag or gladiolus, Gladiolus communis L.; or the rocket larkspur, Delphinium Ajacis L.; also Hyacintha,-ae (s.f.I): a precious stone of the color of a hyacinth (perhaps our sapphire or a dark-colored amethyst)” (Lewis & Short).

- [Hyacinthus; genus] Calyx nullus. Corolla campanulata,sexfida aut sexpartita. Filamena basi laciniarum adhaerentia. Capsula supera, triangularis, trilocularis, trivalvis, polysperma. (Desf.), calyx none. Corolla campanulat, six-divided [i.e. by half] or divided into six parts. Filaments at the base of the laciniae adherent. Capsule superior, triangular, trilocular, with three valves, many-seeded.
