A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Hypochilium, hypochil, hypochile, the basal portion of the labellum of Orchids, “the (often fleshy or otherwise modified) basal portion of the labellum or lip in Orchidaceae” (Fernald 1950) [> Gk. hypo- ‘under’ + cheilos, a lip]: hypochilium,-ii (s.n.II), abl.sg. hypochilio, nom. & abl. pl. hypochilia, dat. & abl. pl. hypochiliis; also, according to Jackson, hypochilus,-i (s.m.II), abl.sg. hypochilo, nom. pl. hypochili, acc. pl. hypochilos, dat. & abl. pl. hypochilis; see epichilium, mesochilium;

- [Stanhopea] lobi laterales unguem marginantes v. erecti, saepe in massam solidam incrassati, hypochilium formantes globosum oblongum v. calceiforme, basi interdum 2-cornutum (B&H), the lateral lobes bordering the claw or erect, often thickened into a solid mass, forming the globose, oblong or slipper-shaped hypochile, at the base sometimes 2-horned.

- [Stanhopea] lobus medius nunc brevissimus integer ab hypochilio vix distinctus, nunc evolutus continuus v. articulatus epichilium integrum v. 3-lobum formans, v. basi lobis v. cornubus 2 distinctis metachilium formantibus instructus (B&H), the middle lobe sometimes very short, entire, scarcely distinct from the hypochile, sometimes developed, continuous or jointed, forming an entire or 3-lobed epicheil or at the base provided with 2 distinct lobes or horns forming the metachile.

- labellum cum basi columnae continuum, patens, angustum, carnosum, lobi laterales unguem crassum seu hypochilium marginantes (B&H), the labellum continuous with the base of the column, spreading, narrow, fleshy, the lateral lobes bordering the thick claw or hypochile.
