A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
inclinatus,-a,-um (part.A): inclined, leaning or bent down, diverging downwards; less than vertical, between erect and horizontal; inclined from the horizontal; sloped, slanted, tilted, ‘a direction out of the true vertical or horizontal, such as the inclination of a column or a roadbed;’ “falling back considerably from the horizontal line” (Lindley); “falling away from the horizontal direction” (Jackson); making an angle with a line (such as a stem, seta, petiole, peduncle) or plane; (mosses) “capsules that are between the erect and horizontal position, i.e., drooping” (Magill 1990) [> L. inclino,-avi,-atum 1. (in + clinatus) to cause to lean or bend, to bow, to lean, to tilt, to incline, turn or change in a direction, to bend down or bow something] + ad and acc.; in + acc.;

oblique, q.v. “neither perpendicular nor parallel: having a slanting direction or position, inclined” (WIII).

(In mosses) inclined: (of capsules at the end of setae) oblique from attachment to the seta, often slightly so (suberect); neither perpendicular (horizontal) to it, nor parallel (vertical, erect); having a slanting direction or position, turned at an angle to the vertical of 20-60 degrees; see erect; cernuus, q.v., is turned down at an angle from the horizontal;

- (of color: to incline to, disposed to, tending toward) colore ad aurum inclinato, with the color inclined to golden.

- (moss) theca (pro plantulae exiguitate) longipedunculata ovalis cernua inclinata brevis vix strumosa exacte terminalis (Mueller), the theca (for the minuteness of the plant) long-pedunculate [i.e. with a long seta], oval, cernuous [i.e. slightly nodding with the face downturned] inclinate [i.e. tilted], short, scarcely strumose, strictly terminal.

- (moss) theca inclinata obovalis subcernua pallida substrumosa (Mueller), with the theca inclined [i.e. leaning] oboval, somewhat nodding [i.e. with the face turned downward], pale, somewhat strumose.

- galea conica elongata inclinata vel recta antice abrupte rostrata (DeCandolle), with the galea conic, elongate, inclined [i.e. tilted] bent down or straight, antically abruptly rostrate.

- (moss) [Distichium inclinatum] theca inclinata ovalis (Mueller), with the theca inclined, oval.

- antherarum thecis poro apicali ventraliter inclinato, with the thecae of the anthers with a ventrally inclined apical pore.

- [Macradenia] columna rostello erecto v. leviter inclinato tenui terminata (B&H), the column terminated by an erect or slightly inclined slender rostellum.

- [Acriopsis] rostellum terminale, erectum v. antrorsum inclinatum (B&H), the rostellum terminal, erect or inclined [turned forward] toward the tip.

- [Anoectochilus] anthera ad marginem clinandrii in rostello inclinata v. suberecta (B&H), the anther at the margin of the clinandrium turned forward [inclined] into the/a rostellum or nearly erect.

Ptychostomum inclinatum, referring to the pendulous capsules.
