A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Induviae,-arum (pl.f.I), abl.pl. induviis: “withered leaves remaining upon a stem, and clothing it” (Lindley); persistent parts, e.g. withered leaves nevertheless persisting on the shoot or accrescent or withered calyx, corolla or perigon clothing the fruit; “1. persistent portions of the perianth, or leaves which wither, but do not fall off; 2. scale-leaves” (Jackson) [> L. induviae,-arum (pl.f.I) “something put on, a garment, etc.” (Glare)] [> L. induo, on analogy of exuviae, i.e., L. uxuo,-ui,-utum, 3. to draw off, to pull or strip off, divest (Lewis & Short]; = reliquiae,-arum (pl.f.I), q.v., ‘leavings;’ cf. remnant; see exuviae,-arum (pl.f.I); see induvialis,-e (adj.A);

NOTE: of various early authors writing in Latin, only DeCandolle uses this word, and for characteristics of the capsule;

- [Alsodeia] Capsula calyce et corolla persistentibus induviata obverse turbinata obtuse 3-gona (DeCandolle), capsule induviate with persistent calyx and corolla, obversely turbinate, obtusely 3-angled.

- [Hymenanthera] capsula subbaccata (in sicco rugosa aut venosoreticulata) tenuis ovata (uniloculars monosperma ? [sic]) 2-locularis, loculis 1-spermis (sec. Brown), calyce petalis staminibusque induviata (DeCandolle), capsule somewhat berrylike [i.e. fleshy] (in the dry state rugose or venous-reticulate), thin, ovate (unilocular? with one seed?) 2-locular, with the locules one-seeded (according to Brown), induviate with the calyx, petals and stamens [i.e. with [remnant] calyx, petals and stamens persisting,i.e. not deciduous].

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
