A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

initio (adv.): = abl. sg. of initium,-ii (s.n.II); 'from or in the beginning;' initially; cf. primo (adv.), primum (adv.), ‘at first,’ in the beginning; see beginning (Eng.noun).

initio (adv.), in the begining; dein (adv.) then, tandem (adv.) finally; postea (adv.): (of time) after that [post ea], thereafter, afterwards, later.

- Baccae initio virides, dein caeruleae, tandem atrae nitidae, odore & sapore aromatico (Swartz), the berries in the beginning green, then blue, finally [shining] black, glossy, with an aromatic [i.e. spicy] odor and flavor.

- caulis initio brevissimus, simplex, persistens, adultior elongatus, foliis prioribus, calycibusque emarcidis tectus. (hac ratione saepe pedalis) (Swartz), in the beginning the stem is very short, unbranched, persistent, the more mature one elongate, covered with the earlier leaves and the withered calyces (for this reason often a foot high).

- pileus initio aequaliter hemisphaerico-convexus, margine involuto subtomentoso; dein paullatim applanatur, demum planissimus, exacte disciformis (S&A); the pileus in the beginning equally hemispheric-convex, with the margine involute, somewhat tomentose; then little by little it is flattened, finally entirely flat, precisely disciform.

- (fungus) sunt ista peridiola initio minuta, mollissima, pulposa, extus intusque unicolora laete flava (S&A), those peridioles in the beginning are minute, very soft, pulpy, both inside and outside of one color, a bright yellow.

- algae maximopere lubricae ramosissimae filiformes coccineo- purpureae, ramulis initio subverticillatis denique frondem ut stratum densum cooperientibus (Agarde), the algae most strongly lubricious [i.e. smooth and slimy], very much branched, filiform, a deep red-purple, with branches at the beginning somewhat verticillate, ultimately covering over the frond as a dense layer.

- [fungi] Sunt ista peridiola initio minuta, mollissima, pulposa, extus intusque unicolora laete flava: paullatim inde in formam plerumque ovato - oblongam, ob situm arctum diversimode compressam, excrescunt (S&A), those are peridioles at the beginning minute, very soft [i.e. pliant], pulpy [i.e. soft and juicy], both inside and outside unicolorous [i.e. of a single color], with a lively yellow color; little by little [i.e. gradually]] from that point they grow up usually ovately-oblong in form, compressed in various ways due to their tight surroundings.

- lanugine constat tenerrima, ut fibræ nonnisi armato oculo dignosci queant, ab initio rectae, postea invicem implexæ (Dill.), it is composed of a very fine down, such that the fibers can only to be distinguished with the aided eye [i.e. assisted with a lens], straight in the beginning, later mutually intertwined.

- initio gustus dulcis mox in amaritudinem transit (pseudoGalen in Everett), in the beginning tasting sweet but soon changes into a bitterness.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
