A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Jaundice: aurugo,-inis (s.f.III), abl. sg. aurugine: the jaundice (from its color); a sickly look, paleness; of plants, mildew [> L. aurum,-i (s.n.II), gold].
jaundice-yellow, a sickly, pale yellow: aurugineus,-a,-um (adj.A), jaundiced, yellow color; ictericus,-a,-um (adj.C); icterinus,-a,-um (adj.A).
Jaundice, also known as ‘icterus:’ “yellowish pigmentation of the skin, tissues, and certain body fluids caused by the deposition of bile pigments”; “a disease or adnormal condition that is characterized by jaundice; infectious hepatitis” (after WIII); commonly associated also with itchiness [> ME jaunis, jaundis > MF jaunisse, fr. jaune, ‘yellow’ > L. galbinus,-a,-um (adj.A), yellowish green, > galbus, ‘yellow’ + isse = -ice (WIII)] [> Gk. ikteros (s.m.II), jaundice]:

aurugo,-inis (s.f.III), q.v., abl. sg. aurugine: the jaundice (from its color); a sickly look, paleness; (of plants) mildew; [= Gk. ikteris (Liddell & Scott).

ictericia,-ae (s.f.I): jaundice;

- [Lichen fontanus major “the great water liverwort” (Dill.)] sanat icteritiam, decocto ejus assumpto, aut aqua destillata: purgat leviter humores adustos & crassos, si in magna copia assumatur (Dill.), it cures jaundice, by a decoction [i.e. potion] of it taken, or distilled in water: it lightly cleanses the humores [i.e. body fluids] burned [i.e. from inflammation or fever] and thick, if it might be taken in large amounts.

Icterus,-i (s.m.II), q.v., abl.sg. ictero: jaundice (commonly associated with itchiness); a yellowing of plant leaves caused by excessive cold or moisture; see mildew. Jeterus,-i (s.m.II), abl.sg. jetero: “a mistake of Bischoff, copied by Lindley, for ‘icterus,-i’ (s.m.II), vegetable jaundice” (Jackson).
jaundice, suffering from; jaundiced, icteric: auruginatus,-a,-um part.A), q.v.; ictericus,-a,-um (adj.A): jaundiced; of or relating to jaundice; “jaundice-yellow” (Stearn) [> L. icterus,-i (s.m.II), q.v.].
