A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
kidney-shaped (of outlines and flat objects), “resembling the figure of a kidney; that is to say, crescent-shaped, with the ends rounded, as the leaf of Asarum europaeum” (Lindley): renarius,-a,-um (adj.A), reniformis,-e (adj.B); (of solid objects): nephroideus,-a,-um (adj.A) kidney-shaped (used of solid objects such as seeds); in Gk. comp. nephr-, nephro-, 'kidney-';

- nephrolepis, with kidney-shaped scales; nephrophyllus, with kidney-shaped leaves (Stearn).

- seminibus reniformibus exasperatis(DeCandolle), with the seeds kidney-shaped, roughened.

-semina in quoque loculo plurima reniformia in pulpa pellucida glutinosa nidulantia (DeCandolle), seeds many in each locule, kidney-shaped, nesting in a transparent glutinous pulp.

reniformi-cordatus,-a,-um (adj.A): “both kidney-shaped and heart-shaped combined” (Lindley).

Viola nephrophylla Greene, plant with kidney-shaped leaves.
Kidney: renes (pl.m.III), gen.pl. renum (or renium); the singular ren (or rien) is not used; the kidneys, reins, also the loins, also (ecclesiastic Latin) the seat of the affections; acc. pl. renes, dat. & abl. pl. renibus (Lewis & Short); see nephr-, nephro-: in Gk. comp., kidney- [> Gk. nephros (s.m.II), “in pl. kidneys (rarely in sg.)” (Liddell & Scott).
