A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
limbatus,-a,-um (abj.A): limbate; bordered, having a border; “having one color, surrounded by an edging of another” (Lindley);bordered “as with one color edged by another more broadly than in marginatus” (Stearn); often a syn. in epithets with marginatus,-a,-um (adj.A); (in mosses) bordered by distinct, elongate and incrassate cells as in Syrrhopodon or Fissidens; (fungi) “edged with another color” (Ainsworth & Bisby);

- folia secus marginem limbata, leaves along the margin bordered.

- (moss) areolatione ad utramque baseos alam cellulis minutissimis denseque confertis late limbatam laxiori, e cellulis majoribus quadratis limpidissimis (DozyMoek) with the areolation more uncongested, on either wing [i.e. alar region] of the base broadly bordered with very minute cells and densely pressed together.

- (moss) folia apice obsolete flavide limbata, leaves at the apex faintly yellowishly bordered.

- foliis dentibus basi confluentibus quasi limbatis (C. Mueller), with the leaves as if bordered by teeth running together at the base.

- a Bryo capillari foliis crassissime limbatis valde refugit (C. Mueller), it strongly escapes Bryum capillaris by the leaves very thickly bordered.

- calyptra haud fimbriata sed cellulis brevissimis basi limbata. (C. Mueller), the calyptra hardly fimbriate but bordered at the base by very short cells.

- folia margine cellulis multis angustioribus flavidis limbata, (C. Mueller), leaves bordered on the margin with many narrower yellowish cells.

- albo-limbatus, white-bordered; angustilimbatus, narrow-bordered; semilimbatus, half-bordered.

NOTE: marginatus,-a,-um (adj.A), margined, edged, bordered.

Acosta limbata; Bryum marginatum = Bryum limbatum; Centaurea limbata; Cyperus limbatus. Hypopterygium flavolimbatum, with a yellow border.

elimbatus,-a,-um (adj.A): without a border;

- folia elimbata vel limbo e cellulis prope apicem folii 1-3 angustioribus parietibus crassioribus minus papillosis, leaves borderless or with a limb from 1-3 narrower cells with thicker walls, less papillose near the apex.

Limbate volva: volva,-ae (s.f.I) limbatus (adj.A); see volva.
