A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Mamma,-ae (s.f.I), abl.sg. mamma, nom.pl. mammae, acc.pl. mammas, dat. & abl. pl. mammis: 'a breast, pap, esp. of females, rarely of males; also a teat, dug of animals; a protuberance on the bark of a tree;' a rounded-conic projection, resembling the mammalian breast.

- (Juppiter) puer lactens Fortunae in gremio sedens, mammam appetens, the boy (Juppiter) unweaned sitting in the lap of Fortuna seeking her breast.

- ad duritiem mammarum propter lactis coagulationem, lavetur locus bis de die (Ray), for hardness of the breasts due to coagulation [i.e. curdling] of the milk, the place may be bathed twice a day.

NOTE: the genus Mammea, L. in the Guttiferae, derives from ‘mamey,’ “the aboriginal West Indian name of M. americana” (Bailey), commonly called the Mammee-Apple or Mamey. Note in algae, in the Agardh tribe CHONDRIEAE, there is also a genus Mammea J. Ag.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
