A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

medullary (adj.), of the medulla: medullaris,-e (adj.B);

NOTE: medulla,-ae (s.f.I) in the genitive singular = medullae: cellulis medullae hyalinis, with cells of the medulla hyaline.

- stratum,-i (s.n.II) medullare, abl. sg. strato medullari, nom. & acc. pl. strata medullaria.

- cellulae medullares, medullary cells.

- caulis ex cellulis corticalibus medullaribusque comparate paucis compositus, stem composed of relatively few cortical and medullary cells.

- frútices alte scandentes, volubiles, ligno inter radios medullares densiores pulcherrime poroso, liquorem limpidum potabilm scatente (B&H), shrubs tall climbing, twining, with the wood between the medullary rays most beautifully porose, abounding in a clear drinkable liquor.

- [alga] frons costata e cellulis granulosa materia repletis contexta; centralibus tenuioribus in fila dichotoma longitudinalia coordinatis, stratum medullare formantibus (Agardh), the blade is costate, constructed of cells full of a granulose material; with the central ones thinner, coordinated into dichotomouss longitudinal filaments, forming the medullary layer.

- [alga] cellulae filiformes strati medullaris, antea breviores, elongantur, laxiores fiunt, et spatia antea subvacua reticulo filorum moniliformium anastomosantium implent (Agardh), the filiform cells of the medullary layer, formerly shorter, are protracted, they may be more lax, and the spaces preciously nearly empty fill with a network of moniliform filaments anastomosing.

- [Diplotrichia; alga] fila simplicia intus annulata, a globulo hemispherico egredientia bina, e strato medullari radiantia, sacculo mucilaginoso basi cincta, in frondem gelatinosam (saepe separatione inflatam) laxe disposita. (Agardh), filaments undivided, ringed within, two each issuing forth from a hemispheric globule, radiating from the medullar layer, surrounded at the base with a mucilaginous saccule, arranged into a gelatinous frond (often upon separation inflated).

- [alga] fila strati medullaris versus peripheriam quoque horizontaliter egrediuntur (si recto viderim), at inter cellulas majores strati medii sparsissima (Agardh), the filaments of the medullary layer toward the periphery also horizontally arising (if I should have observed correctly), and very scattered among the larger cells of the middey layer.

Corona,-ae (s.f.I), q.v.: “tracheids forming a circle round the pith, the primary xylem bundles projecting into the pith from the cambium-ring” (Jackson).

Corona,-ae (s.f.I), q.v.: “the medullary crown, or medullary sheath” (Jackson)

Medullary insertions, “(obs.) the medullary processes of Exogens” (Lindley): insertio (s.f.III) medullaris, abl. sg. insertione medullari.

Radii (nom.pl. radius,-ii (s.m.II)) medullares (adj.B), abl. pl. radiis medullaribus: “medullary rays, the cellular plates or processes which connect the pith of Exogens with the bark, constituting the ‘silver grain’ of their wood” (Lindley).

Thallidium,-ii (s.n.II), abl. sg. thallidio, nom. & acc. pl. thallidia: “the medullary layer in Lichens in a young state” (Jackson).

Vagina,-ae (s.f.I) medullaris, “medullary sheath, a thin stratum of spiral vessels formed immediately over the pith” (Lindley).
medullary (adj.), 'full of pith, pithy;' medullose, with loose, soft, spongy plant tissues; cellulose, full of cells: medullarius,-a,-um (adj.A), medullosus,-a,-um (adj.A), medullatus,-a,-um (adj.A); see stuffed; see spongiosus,-a,-um (adj.A): spongy, porous, soft and water-soaked;

- vas (gen.sg. vasis, s.n.III) medullosum, medullary vessel.

- cellulae corticales caulis cellulis medullosis similes, cortical cells of the stem similar to the medullary cells.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
