A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

napaeus,-a,-um (adj.A): of or belonging to a wooded vale or dell [> Gk. napE (s.f.I), “a woodeded vale, dell, or glen” (Liddell & Scott); the later napos,-eos (s.n.III) continues the idea of a ravine in a grove or thicket, a gully];

- nymphae napaeae, dell-nymphs; see nympha,-ae (s.f.I), nymph.

NOTE: Dell (English): “a small secluded natural hollow or valley usu. covered with trees or turf; obsol. a deep pit in the ground” (WIII);

Napaeae,-arum (pl.f.I), dat. & abl. pl. napaeis: dell-nymphs.

Napaea,-ae (s.f.I) L. Glade-mallow, “from Gk. nape, a glade, or, poetically, a nymph of the glades” (Fernald 1950).

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
