A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Nebula,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. nebula: exhalation, fog, mist; cloud, smoke; haze; a structure, such as a membrane, with a fine texture (filamentous or thread-like, gauzy, cottony); a dark, indistinct spot or area; see vapor; see cloud; = Gk. nephelE,-es (s.f.I), q.v., and nephos,-eos (s.n.III), cloud, mist, fog; - [Lichenoides] Superficies ubique lævis est, colore inferne fulvo, superne livide fusco, cui nebula cinerea tam dense & arcte superinducta est, ut folia non nisi cinerea appareant (Dill.), the surface is smooth on both sides, with a yellowish-brown color below, a grayish-brown color above, on which a ashy-white haze [i.e. a fine-textured material] has been drawn over [i.e. superimposed] so densely and closely, that the leaves may appear only ashy-white. - [Sphaeria nebulosa; fungi] crusta nigra subcuticularis sphaerulas connectens, in oblique transcissa per lentem distincte visibilis, nebulam griseam per epidermidem transmicando efficit (S&A) = a black, subcuticular crust, connecting the sphaerules, cut across obliquely, distinctly visible through a lens, produces [by shining through = (perhaps) by transmitted light] a gray [indistinct, dark spot] through the epidermis. (= seen with an oblique light). NOTE: cf. nubecula,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. nubecula: a little cloud; something cloudy or dark, hence a small dark spot; gloomy in appearance; see spot; cf. nephion, dim. of nephos, ‘cloud:’ a cloudlike spot.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
