A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
nonnisi (conj.), non nisi: only; not unless; not except; see ‘only;’

- hanc quoque nonnisi semel, sed frequentem, aggregatam et sparsam, ad ligna pinea fabrefacta reperimus (S&A), this too we found only once, but frequent, aggregated and scattered, constructed on piny wood.

- hactenus nonnisi semel inventus in fruticetis frondosis umbrosis, ineunte Septembri (S&A), thus far only once encountered in shady, leafy [i.e. deciduous] thickets, at the onset of September.

- genus a Pavonia nonnisi coccis glochidiatis diftert (B&H), the genus differs from Pavonia only by the glochidiate cocci.

- in tam dira regione nonnisi de nocte suscipiuntur itinera (Desf.), in so dreadful a region, journeys are undertaken only during the night [i.e. are not taken unless during the night].

- lanugine constat tenerrima, ut fibræ nonnisi armato oculo dignosci queant, ab initio rectae, postea invicem implexæ (Dill.), it is composed of a very fine down, such that the fibers can only to be distinguished with the aided eye [i.e. assisted with a lens], straight in the beginning, later mutually intertwined.

- bracteolis in apice nonnisi cilio unico praeditis, bracteoles in the apex provided with only one cilium.
