Peloria,-ae (s.f.I), abl.sg. peloria: a peloria, “a return from habitual irregularity to regular form, as in the common Toadflax [Linaria vulgaris]” (Lindley); “an irregular flower become regular by an exceptional development of complementary irregularites” (Jackson); an abnormal regularity or symmetricity in a normally irregular flower [> Gk. pelOros, monstrous > pelOr, portent, monster: pelOr (s.n.III), portent, prodigy, monster; also pelOron (s.n.II), “of the Gorgon; of the offspring of the earth; of the enchanted animals of Circe; as adj. pelOros,-E,-on, “monstrous, prodigious, huge [as of huge animals], with the collateral notion of ‘terrible” (Liddell & Scott)]; see monster; cf. gigas,-gantis (s.m.III).

- peloriae irregulares vel regulares, irregular or regular peloriae.

irregular peloria, “peloria by the symmetric multiplication of the irregular portions” (Jackson); “peloria in which symmetry is attained by increase in number of some part” (WIII): peloria irregularis (adj.B), abl. sg. peloria irregulari.

regular peloria, “peloria by the suppression of the irregular parts” (Jackson); “peloria in which symmetry is attained by decrease in number of normally irreglar parts” (WIII): peloria regularis (adj.B), abl. sg. peloria regulari.
