A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Plebania,-ae (s.f.I): [used in Polish] rectory; parsonage (i.e. “the residence of Roman Catholic priest(s) associated with a parish church”(Wiktionary Feb. 2019); a parish, “(in the Christian Church) a small administrative district typically having its own church and a priest or pastor” (Wikipedia Feb. 2019); a rural burough (frazione) of a larger municipality in Italy, e.g.

NOTE: a word often used by Pier Antonio Micheli (1679 - 1737), a botanist and director of the gardens of Florence, Italy, and perhaps most references in the botanical Latin literature refer to administrative districts in and around Florence, a place rich in trees of the genus Castanea.

a) Plebania Pratolini: Pratoleno: Villa di Pratolino, a Renaissance patrician villa in Vaglia, Tuscany, Italy, mostly demolished in 1820.

b) Plebania Cercinae: Cercina today is a frazione (rural borough) of the municipality of Sesto Fiorentino, in the Metropolitan City of Florence, central Italy, located on the slopes of Mount Morello. Sights include the Castle of Castiglione, a former possession of the Catellini Castiglione family (Wikipedia Feb. 2019).

c) Plebania Juguli [Jujuli], perhaps a district or borough on the ridge of one of the hills of Florence.

d) Plebania Imprunetae: Impruneta is a town and comune of the Metropolitan City of Florence in the Italian region of Tuscany; the name Impruneta is derived from inprunetis meaning "within the pine woods"; the comune is a basic administrative division in Italy, roughly equivalent to a township or municipality; smaller unit = borough; districts, neighborhoods.

e) Plebania Casiniani: another administrative unit of Florence municipality.

- [Lichen Pulmonarius] in Monte Acuto Florentia non longe, in Plebania Cercinae (Mich.), on Monte Acuto, not far from Florence, in the Plebania of Cercina.

- [Lichen Pulmonarius] per Imprunetae, Casiniani, Pratolini, & Plebaniae Cercinae colles ad saxa abunde oritur (Mich.), it springs abundantly throughout the hills of Impruneta, Casiniani, Pratolini, and Plebania Cercinae [i.e. the frazione of Cercina] on stones.

- [Riccia minima] in Juguli Plebania per sylvam caeduam, Castaneis consitam Ascetriarum Divi Felicis, & alibi in eodem territorio (Mich.), in Plebania Juguli throughout the cutting-wood [coppice-wood], planted to the Castaneae of the nuns of the of Saint Felix, and elsewhere in the same region.

- [Lichen tubulatus] in montosis sylvis, praesertim in Imprunetae Plebania ad putrida Castanearum ligna (Mich.), in montane forests, especially in the Plebania of Impruneta on the rotted woods of the Castaneas.

- [Lichen Pulmonarius] in Monte Acuto Florentia non longe, in Plebania Cercinae (Mich.), on Monte Acuto, not far from Florence, in the Plebania of Cercina.

- [Lichen Pulmonarius] in saxis circa Cercinae Plebaniam, speciatim ubi dicitur ‘le Lepricine;’ crescit etiam in quamplurimis locis per Fesulanum Montem (Mich.), on the stones around the Plebania of Cercina, in particular where it is called ‘le Lepricine,’ it grows also in very many places throughout Monte Fesulanum.

- [Lichen crustaceus] in Casiniani collibus, inter rus Domini de Arrighis, & rivulum ‘Soglia,’ nec non in Plebania Cercinae, per loca ‘le Masse,’ in capite viae, quae ad supradictam Ecclsiam ducit (Mich.), on the hills of [Plebiana] Casiniani, between the estate of Domini de Arrighis, and the river ‘Soglia,’ and also in the Plebania of Cercina, throughout the places ‘le Masse,’ at the head of the road, which leads to the aforementioned Church.

- [Agaricum squamoosum] mense Decembri, per territorium Plebaniae Decimi, secus Palostram rivulum, ad Arbutos (Mich.), in the December month, throughout the region of the Plebania Decimi, along the Palostra river, on Arbutus [shrubs].

- [Fungus] sub Pinetis Novembri mense, per Juguli Plebianiam, variis in locis (Mich.), below a Pine association in the November month, throughout the Plebiana Juguli, in different places.

- ultra Juguli Plebaniam in Castaneto Monialium Divæ Felicitatis, & in umbrosis ambulacris viridarii Boboli (Dill.), beyond the Plebania Juguli in the Chestnut [Castanea] grove of the nuns of Saint Felicityy, and in the shaded promenade of the Viridarium [i.e. Garden] of Boboli.
