A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Sand (Eng.noun): “a loose material consisting of small but easily distinguishable grains, usu. less than two mm. in diameter ..; a mass of this material esp. on a beach or a desert; a tract, region or deposit of sand: beach, shore” (WIII): arena,-ae (s.f.I), q.v., sand(s), sandy place, sandy desert; sandbar; beach, coast, shore (classically harena,-ae (s.f.I) = sabulo,-onis (s.m.,III), abl. sg. sabulone, 'coarse sand and gravel,' = sabulum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. sabulo 'coarse sand and gravel;' = saburra,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. saburra, sand, especially used as ballast in ships; see gravel; see gravelly.

(plural) arenae,-arum (pl.f.I) =‘desert, wasteland;’ also extensive sandy shorelines; see desert;

Arenula,-ae (s.f.I): fine sand, a grain of sand (Lewis & Short) [> L. dim. of arena,-ae (s.f.I), sand].

aren-, areni-: in L. comp. sand-;

- arenicola,-ae (s.f.I): dwelling on sand.

amm-, ammo-, q.v.: in Gk. comp., sand-: sand; sandy ground, racecourse (Liddell & Scott);

- ammobius, dwelling on sand; ammophilus, sand-loving.

- ammogenus,-a,-um (adj.A), born of the sands, dweller in sandy regions.

- ammophilus,-a,-um (adj.A), sand-loving, dwelling on sand.

psammo-, q.v.: in Gk. comp., sand- = Lat. sabulum (Liddell & Scott);

- psammogenus,-a,-um (adj.A), born of the sands, dweller in sandy regions.

- psammophilus, sand-loving; (fungi) “sand-loving; living on sand” (S&D).

Psammos (s.f.II), sand. psamminos,-E,-on (Gk.adj.) = amminos,-E,-on (Gk.adj.), sandy. psamathia (s.f.I): sandy sea-shore. samathos (s.f.II; one ‘m’), sand of the sea-shore; grains of sand (from Liddell & Scott).

syrti-, syrtido-: q.v.: in Gk. comp. sand-bank, sand-dune [> Gk. syrtis,-idos s.f.III, a sand-bank in the sea;

sands, shifting: arenae mobiles (adj.B), abl.sg. arenis mobilibus;

- [Saccharum cylindricum] arenas mobiles coercet (Desf.), it holds together shifting sands.

arenatus,-a,-um (adj.A): “sanded, covered or mixed with sand” (Lewis & Short).

Sabulo,-onis (s.f.III), abl. sg. sabulone; also sabulum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. sabulo: gravel, coarse sand; syn. arena,-ae (s.f.I), glarea,-ae (s.f.I); see gravel.

NOTE: psammo-, q.v.: in Gk. comp., sand- [> Gk. psammos (s.f.or m.II): “sand; grains of sand; = Lat. sabulum (Liddell & Scott).

Thinium,-ii (s.n.II), abl. sg. thinio, dat. & abl. pl. thiniis: a sand-dune [> Gk. ‘this’ [theta,-i,-s], gen. sg. thinos (s.m. and f. III), a heap, esp. of sand-banks; sand-bank, sandbar, at the mouth of a river; the banks of a stream; sand or mud at the bottom of the sea (Liddell & Scott); a heap of sand on the beach, a dune + -ion, diminutive]; see dune.
