A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

schist-, schisto-; -schistus,-a,-um (adj.A): in Gk. comp., split, cleft, deeply divided [> Gk. schistos,-a,-on, cloven, divided, split, open at the side], > schizein, split, cleave]; syn. L. fissus,-a,-um (part.A), q.v.; cf. schiz-; see stone;

- lapis,-idis (s.m.III) schistosus, abl.sg. lapide schistoso: schistose stone, i.e. fissile stone.

- lapis,-idis (s.m.III) schistus, abl.sg. lapide schisto.

- ad lapidem schistum, on schistose (fissile) rock.

- Alchemilla curtischista, shortly cleft or divided.

- schistoglossus, with a split tongue, i.e. labellum; schistopterus, with split wing or wings; schistostegus, with a split or fissile covering or top.

- oligoschistus, with few splits, cracks or divisions; polyschistus, much divided.

- lapis,-idis (s.m.III) schistos: schist, that easily cleaves or cracks, fissile, schistose, a name given to a kind of red oxide of iron by Pliny; lac, i.e. curdled.

- [Schistomitrium] Nomen graccae compositionis a verbis [schistos] ‘fissus,’ et [mitrion] ob calyptram basi fimbriatam deductum (Mueller), the name of Greek composition derived from the words [schistos] ‘divided,’ and mitrion [i.e. cap] due to the calyptra fimbriate at the base.

Codriophorus schisti (Web. et Mohr) Hag. (although note should be taken that in one of the texts seen (Brotherus), the epithet was spelled with a capital "S", indicating the word is a proper noun, perhaps a person's name or the name of an earlier genus. Common nouns as epithets are not capitalized.

[moss] Schistidium,-ii, abl.sg. Schistidio: > Gk. schistos, split, divided + dim. -idium, in reference to the variously divided and perforated peristome teeth.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
