A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

sempervivus,-a,-um (adj.A): ever-living, always alive [> L. semper, always + vivus,-a,-um (adj.A), living, fresh; alive, that has life];

- Sempervivum, Gk. aeizOon, Sedum majus, House-leek. (Ray)

- Sedum majus, arborescens. Sempervivum sive Sedum arborescens, majus (Tourn.), Sedum majus, arborescens. = Sempervivum or Sedum arborescens, majus.

Sempervivum L. “from ‘semper vivo,’ to live for ever; the tenacity of life of the House-leek is well known” Crassulaceae. (Paxton).

[fungus] Uredo Sempervivi, the Uredo of [the host] Sempervivum.

sempervivoides, also sempervivoideus,-a,-um (adj.A): resembling Sempervivum (Stearn 1996).

Aloe sempervivoides. ‘resembling Sempervivum.’

Sempervivum [globiferum L.], Liveforever, (Hens and Chicks), succulent perennials (Crassulaceae).

Sempervivum,-i (s.n.II) House-leek > L. semper, always + vivus, alive, living. Houseleek, S. tectorum (of roofs), was regarded as effective against lightning and for that reason this fleshy herb was planted on roofs. Crassulaceae” (Stearn 1996).

Aizoon, i.e. Sempervivum, Sengreen (Ray); Aizoon > Gk. aei, always + -zoon: type of the family Aizoaceae; “of low-growing evergreen, spreading plants ...” (WIII).

NOTE: in the following taxa, the epithet seems to be a noun in apposition, not an adjective: Cochlearia sempervivum, Rosularia sempervivum, Saxifraga sempervivum; Umbilicus sempervivum, Viola sempervivum.

The following epithets appear to be in the genitive singular: Cactus sempervivi; Neomammillaria sempervivi

Sempervivella (diminutive).

Sinapidendron sempervivifolium, with the leaves of Sempervivum.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
