A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
sixteen, 16 (indeclinable numerical adjective): sedecim, sexdecem [sex + decem; decem et sex]; often used in reference to the peristome teeth of mosses, which are commonly 16; see sedecim,

- [moss] peristomium sedecim-dentatum, dentibus longis (Hooker), the peristome 16-dentate, with the teeth long.

- [moss] peristomium intra marginem oris, e dentibus constans sedecim per paria approximatis (Hooker), the peristome within the edge of the mouth, composed of 16 teeth in pairs close together.

- [moss] membrana cupuliformis, foraminibus sedecim dentibus externis oppositis, apice aperta, 16 plicata (C. Mueller), with the membrane cup-shaped, with the 16 openings opposite the outer teeth, open at the apex, 16-plicate [i.e. with 16 folds or pleats].
