A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Sky (Eng.noun): coelum,-i (s.n.II), q.v., abl. sg. coelo; also caelum,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. caelo; divum,-i (s.n.II), q.v., abl. sg. divo, the open sky; sub divo = sub Jove, in the open air, under the open sky; Jovis,-is (s.m.III), q.v.,(Iovis,-is), acc. sg. Jovem, dat. sg. Jovi, abl. sg. Jove = the Roman Juppiter (Jupiter) (= Jovis pater) = Gk. Zeus; Jovis may poetically refer to the sky or heaven, or the air, as the god of these places;

- caelum siccum, a rainless (i.e. dry) sky (opp. caelum imbridum, rainy sky).

- lianae ad caelum tendentes, lianas stretching out to the sky

- sub divo, sub dio; in divo, in dio: in the open air, under the open sky [e.g. as opp. to in a greenhouse].

- semel, ineunte Januario, in pyris sub dio projectis (S&A), one time, January coming in [i.e. at the beginning of January], on a pear tree out-stretched under the open sky.

- sub Jove frigido, under a cold sky, in cold weather.

- pluvio Iove, Jove pluvio, from a rainy sky, in rainy weather.

- sub Jove, in the open air.

Aethra,-ae (s.f.I): = Gk. aithra, the upper, pure air, the bright, clear, serene sky (Lewis & Short); see aer, gen.sg. aeris (s.m.III); see air.

Caerula,-orum (pl.n.II), abl.pl. caerulis: the sea, the blue surface of the sea (Lewis & Short); “the blue expanse (of the sky)” (Glare).
