A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
spathaceus,-a,-um (adj.A): spathe-like, provided with a spathe; “having the appearance of a spathe, or being furnished with one” (Lindley);

- calyx obsolete 3-fidus, involucro cupuliformi spathaceo cinctus (B&H), the calyx scarcely 3-fid, surrounded by a cup-shaped, spathe-like involucre.

- sepala v. basi in tubam connata, tubo infundibuliformi v. campanulato, v. calyx spathaceus (B&H), sepals either at the base connate into a tube, the tube infundibuliform, or campanulate, or the calyx spathaceus.

- calyx spathaceus, lateraliter ruptus, calyx spathaceous, ruptured laterally.

- spicae brevissimae, paucispiculatae, intra bracteam spathaceam rigidule paleaceam inclusae (B&H), spikes very short, few-spikeleted, included within a spathe-like bract stiffly chaff-like.

- calyx ore truncatus, v. spathaceus, v. rarius aequaliter 5-dentatus (B&H), the calyx truncate at the mouth, or spathe-like, or more rarely equally 5-dentate.

- foliis caulinis supremis spathaceis, pedúnculo brevi flexuoso (F. Mueller), with the uppermost cauline leaves spathe-like, with a short, flexuose peduncle.

- calyx spathaceus cucullatus ad medium fissus (F. Mueller), the calyx spathe-like, cucullate, split to the middle.

- florum masculorum terminalium calyce exteriore spathaceo interiorem excedente, (F. Mueller), with the outer calyx of the terminal male flowers spathe-like, exceeding the inner [calyx].

- bracteis foliaceis linearibus acutis basi spathaceis margine scariosis (F. Mueller), with the bracts leafy, linear, acute, at the base spathe-like, scarious at the margin.

- bractea altera spathacea saepe ad spicae basin sita, altitudine inferiores aequans, sed iisdem conspicue angustior (F. Mueller), the other bract spathe-like, often situated at the base of the spike, equalling the lower ones in height, but conspicuously narrower than those.

- [Poaceae] spiculae pauci- (l-4-)florae, breviter subspicatae, singulae v. geminae bractea spathacea involutae (B&H), spiklets few- (1-4-)flowered, shortly almost spikate, single or paired, enveloped in a spathe-like bract.

- [Poaceae] Bracteae spathaceae fere glumiformes sub spicarum ramulis et spiculis ipsis interdum glumae gemmiparae dicuntur (B&H), the spathe-like bracts, almost glume-like, beneathe the branchlets of the spikes and the spikelets themselves sometimes are said to be gemmiparous glumes.

spathaceo-bracteatus,-a,-um (adj.A): with a spathelike bract;

- spadicibus fasciculatis v. paniculatis spathaceo-bracteatis (B&H), with the spadices fasciculate or paniculate, spathaceous-bracteate.

Spathilla, “a secondary spathe in a spathaceous inflorescence, as in Palms” (Lindley): spathilla,-ae (s.f.I), abl.sg. spathilla.

Reedia spathacea (Cyperaceae; Arundinaria spathiflora, Rupr. [Poaceae], speciem Himalayensem bracteis spathaceis demum caducis spiculas plerasque subtendentibus (B&H), A. spathiflora, a Himalayan species with spathe-like bracts ultimately caducous, subtending many spiklets.
