A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
stagninus,-a,-um (adj.A): resembling stagnant water; of or relating to pools, ponds, impondment with no outlet; a color: perviridis, i.e. deep or bright green [> L. stagnum,-i (s.n.II), q.v., standing water].

A grass of standing waters, delta and river wetlands, swamps:

Andropogon stagnina, Blechnum stagninum; Echinochloa stagnina (Water Grass; Orthopogon stagnina; Panicum stagninum.

Persicaria stagnina (a riparian plant); Rotala stagnina (a marsh plant); Viola stagnina [Fen Violet, a violet associated with fens, marshes; Old World); Ystia stagnina (a marsh plant).

[insect; water or diving beetle] Platambus stagninus

NOTE: Bernardinus Stagninus de Trino, 1490, 1491, 1540; a Venetian printer, publisher; Bernardinus Iolitus alias de Ferrariis dictus Stagninus. [Iolito = Giolito]

NOTE: Venetia,-ae (s.f.I), the country of the Veneti (Lewis & Short) = Venice, Italy.

NOTE: Tridinum,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. Tridino: modern ‘Trino’, a commune of Italy, Province of Vercelli.

NOTE: Tridinum,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. Tridino, also Tredinum, Trinum: = Trino (Piedmontese: Trin) is a modern commune (municipality) in the Province of Vercelli in the Italian region Piedmont, located about 50 kilometres (31 mi) northeast of Turin and about 15 kilometres (9 mi) southwest of Vercelli, at the foot of the Montferrat hills.

NOTE: the epithet ‘stagninus’ may refer to the fact that Venice is developed within a stagnum or lagoon off the Mediterranean Sea; see stagnum,-i (s.n.II).

- Venitiis, Bernardinus Stagninus, de Tridino, at Venice (locative), Bernardinus Stagninus of Tridinum.

- Impressa Venetiis sumptibus magistri Bernardini stagnini de Tridino de Monteferrato, Printed in Venice at the expense of Master Bernardinus stagninus of Tridinm of the Montferrat hills.
