A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

stypticus,-a,-um (adj.A): “(obsol.) astringent” (Lindley); “usually implies use to stanch a wound” (Jackson); = Gk. styptikos, “astringent, styptic” (Lewis & Short); “serving to bind together, astringent” (Glare) [> Gk. styptikos]; see astringent (Eng. adj.);

- medicamenta styptica, abl.pl. medicamentis stypticis: styptic medicines, medicines that are astringent; medicines that serve to bind.

- natura herbae styptica, the astringent or binding nature of a plant.

- vinum stypticum, abl.sg. vino styptico: wine of an acid taste.

- amygdala sunt et suaves et amara et utraque viribus styptica. Magis tamen sunt in usu medicinae et aptiores amarae eo quod stringent magis (pseudoGalen in Everett), almond kernels are both sweet ones and bitter ones and both are styptic [i.e. astringent] in their properties. However the bitter ones are to a greater extent in the usage of medicine and are more suitable and, to that end, because it is more astringent [i.e. binding].

- [Stibium = Antimony] vires autem habet stypticas, unde refrigerat et stringere et lachrymas velut oppilare potest (pseudoGalen in Everett), now then, it has styptic [i.e. astringent, binding] properties, and for this reason it is able to cool down and shrink up, just as it can stop up tears.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
