A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
supernus,-a,-um (adj.A): “that is above, on high, upper; celestial, supernal; lofty, i.e. standing on high ground; see tall (Eng.adj.); positioned on the surface or upper side; opp. infernus,-a,-um (adj.A), q.v., that is below, lower;

NOTE: not often used (except by Ray) and applied mostly applied to flat (i.e. upper and lower) surfaces, such as leaves;

- superna pars utplurimum lacera & discissa apparet (Ray), the upper part appears mostly lacerate [i.e. ragged] and torn apart.

- superna facies subcinericea, ad albidum nonnihil vergens, viscido tactu, fungosis verrucis eminentibus conspersa (Ray), the upper part varying from little like ashes to somewhat whitish, with a viscid feel [i.e. to the touch], sprinkled with projecting, spongy warts [i.e. swellings].

- superna radicis pars, qua se in tres cauliculos dividit, multa habet oblonga, & graminis instar angusta folia (Ray), the upper part of the root, which divides itself into three little stems, has many oblong leaves narrow like a grass.

- superna litora, the upper, i.e. northern shore. (Lewis & Short).

- Mare supernum, “the Propontis or Euxine (in relation to the Hellespont) (Glare).
