A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Synonym; see -nym:

1. a word having the same meaning as another; “names which have the same meaning: a Synonym is what lawyers call an ‘alias’” (Lindley).

2. “A rejected name due to a misapplication or difference in taxonomic judgment.”

Nomenclatural or Homotypic Synonym. Different name based on same type, second name synonym of previous name.

Taxonomic or Heterotypic Synonym. Different name based on different type but taxonomic judgment indicates identity equal to previously described taxon; a metanym” (Radford et al. 1974): synonymum,-i (s.n.II) [also synonymon,-i] , abl. sg. synonymo, nom.& acc. pl. synonyma, dat. & abl. pl. synonymis.

- nomenclator botanicus, seu synonymia plantarum universalis, enumerans ordine alphabetico nomina atque synonyma, botanical nomenclator or whole synonymy of plants, listing in alphabetical order names and synonyms (Stearn).

- species 4, omnes Sibiricae, excl. S. cinerere synonymis paucis, species 4, all Sibirian, except for S. cinerere with few synonyms.

- species ad 80, sed varie aestimatae, usque ad 150 a botanicis, synonymis haud notis inclusis, enumerantur (B&H), species to 80, but variously enumerated, up to 150 by botanists, with the synonyms not known included.

- a Miquelio in Flora sua Indiae Batavae, genus v. synonymum praetermissum est (B&H), by Miquelius in his Flora of the Dutch Netherlands, is an overlooked genus or synynym.

- synonymon junius est Jungermannia reclusa Tayl., saltem p. p. (Lindberg), an earlier synonym is Jungermannia reclusa Tayl., at least in part.

- [TRAGIA Mercurialis] Americana & Indica vix eadem planta. Synonymon & figura Sloanei huc relata, Acalyphae•reptantis sunt. (Swartz), Tragia Americana and indica are hardly the same plant. When the synonym and illustration of Sloane are removed to this place, they are of Acalypha reptans.

- [moss] cognitionem Bryi bimi et pseudotriquetri auctores plurimi quam maxime confusam fecerunt adeo, ut synonyma vix recte intelligi possint (C. Muell.), most authors have made as much as possible a confused [i.e. disorderly] conception of Bryum bimum and pseudotriquetrum to such an extent that the synonyms can hardly be correctly distinquished.

Item synonymon Jaqu. am. 1. tab.i. quod alius est speciei. Vid. Costum spicatam (Swartz), likewise a synonym of Jaqu. am. 1. tab. i. which is of another species. See Costus spicatus.

Item Sloanei, quod ad Amomum sylvestre amandandum (Swartz), in the same way [a synonym] of Sloane, which is to be removed to Amomum sylvestre.

Item Brownei, quod est Alpiniae occidentalis. Vid. Sw. prodr. p. 11 (Swartz), likewise [a synonym] of Browne’s, which is of Alpinia occidentalis. See Sw. prodr. p[age] 11.
