A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
tartareus,-a,-um (adj.A): tartareous, “having a rough crumbling surface, like the thallus of some Lichens” (Lindley; Jackson); having a loose or rough crumbling surface like tartar, as in certain Lichenes [> Mid. Lat. tartarum, wine, tartar; tartar: an incrustation deposited from a liquid, such as cream of tartar “found in the juice of grapes and deposited in wine casks ... as a pale or dark reddish crust or sediment” WIII]; see tartarum,-i (s.n.II);

- Нуberno tempore, multis in locis circa Florentiam , ut in rimis , & cavernulis super ingentia, & tartarea saxa, prope stabulum vaccarum Domini Marchionis de Сastilionis (Mich.), in the winter time, in many places around Florence, as in fissures and cavities upon the huge and crumbling stones near the stable of the cows of the Lord Marqui of Castilio [Castiglione, in Tuscany, Italy).

(lichen) Lecanora tartarea, “thallus thick, tartareous, granulate-conglomerate ...”.
