A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Tea: thea,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. thea.

Thea,-ae (s.f.I) L. “the Latinized Chinese name of the tea plant” (Bailey 1938); Tea Family: Theaceae (Ternstroemiaceae an older name for the family, which also contains the genus Camellia, an older generic name of which was Thea). There are many sources of beverage called ‘teas’ which are substances steeped in (hot) water that is strained and drunk:

Abyssinian and Arabian Tea = Catha edulis; Black or Japanese Tea = Camellia sinensis; Balm Tea = Melissa officinalis; Oswego Tea = Monarda didyma; Siberian Tea = Potentilla rupestris (Uphof 1968).
