A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Thumb, (as a measurement) length of first joint of thumb, 1 inch, approx. 2.5 cm; same as uncia, q.v.; (digitus) pollex (s.m.III), gen. sg. pollicis, abl. sg. pollice; see pollex;

- frondes fiunt pollicem et ultra latae, the fronds become (one inch, 2.5 cm) and more wide.
thumb-lengthed, with the length of the first joint of the thumb (2.5 cm): pollicaris,-e (adj.B);

- flores ad axillas subsessiles, cum columna elongata 2-3-pollicares (B&H), flowers at the axils subsessile, with the elongate column 2-3-pollicares (5-7.5 cm).

- bracteolae saepe pollicares (B&H), bracteoles often 2.5 cm.

- flores pollicares, albi (B&H), flowers 2.5 cm, white.

- corollae graciles, semipollicares, lobis brevissimis (B&H), corollas slender, one half of a pollex, with lobes very short.

- capsula 1-4-pollicaris (B&H), the capsule 1-4-pollicares, capsule 2.5 – 10 cm.

- fructus 2-pollicaris, faciebus 1 1/2 poll. latís planiusculis (B&H), fruit 5 cm, with the faces 3.75 cm wide, somewhat flat.
Thumb, small, thumblet: polliculus,-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. polliculo.

Cyathea polliculi Lehnert "The epithet refers to the relatively small stature of the species, which is a “Tom Thumb“ in its genus (Latin, polliculus = small thumb or finger)."
thumb-like, thumb-shaped: polliciformis,-e (adj.B), pollicaris,-e (adj.B), ‘with the thickness of the thumb.’
